Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ¬ Trailer

If you’ve seen Luc Besson’s 1997 movie The Fifth Element, then you will know the French director can do visually-spectacular sci-fi to stunning effect. He’s now returning to that genre with his new movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets due out next year.

Like The Fifth Element comic book artist Jean-Claude Mézières has helped with production design and the movie is based on the comic book series by Valérian and Laureline, illustrated by Mézières and written by Pierre Christin which ran from 1967 until 2010.

The series followed the adventures of Valérian and his colleague Laureline, who are played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in the film. Christin infused the writing of the comic with humor and Mézières created intricate visuals for the alien worlds the two heroes would traverse.

Looking at the trailer this seems to have been carried over to the film, which looks like it has some stunning CGI in it. Along with all manner of crazy creatures, costumes, and alien worlds that look like Besson has made the most of his $180 million budget.

The trailer certainly leaves you wanting more. Here’s the official synopsis:
